There are about 400 types of onion in the world. About 228 species are grown in Russia. The most common cultivar is the bulb onion. Onion is native to Central Asia, Iran and Afghanistan. It was introduced to Europe by the Romans who taught other European ethnic groups how to cultivate this plant.
